A Comparative Study of the Works of Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dali from an Object Relational Perspective
Park Wan-Yong

Abstract
This study considers the similarities and differences between Van Gogh and Salvador Dali from the viewpoint of object relations theory in which the trauma of childhood turns into the work. For this, this paper compared the traumatic childhood trauma that underlie basis of thair work and related major techniques. Van Gogh and Dali's lives and works show in common the conflicts with the main objects that suppressed them in childhood. The result of comparing the expression with the characteristics related to the content and form of the work and the attitude of life was as follows. First, in the content of the work, Van Gogh expresses the conflict of object loss with passionate brushstrokes while Dali expresses the conflict of subject in surrealistic way by overcoming it with his lover Gala. Second, in the analysis of the formative language of color and matiere, light and shadow and perspective, Gogh expresses the inner description violently with fast and rough matiere and brush strokes using the Impasto technique, contrasting color of yellow and blue, purity lighting, intermediate and distant view for spatial expression. On the other hand, Dali uses surrealistic formative language with smooth matiere without mark of touch, warm colors with high saturation, backlighting, and only close-range and distant views. Third, purposes of production also show a difference in the attitude of life. Van Gogh has poured all of himself violently in a short period of time and was exhausted while Dali tried to overcome the conflict with narcissistic statements and unrealistic attitudes that show off his values and abilities.
